600m.

24 August 2016

An afternoon at the Genbaku Dome Mae and Hiroshima Peace Memorial.

600m is the height at which the 'Little Boy' atomic bomb exploded, an altitude calculated by engineers to cause the most destruction.

World War II communications between US military leaders indicate they understood the atomic bomb served no military value, as the Japanese were already in the process of negotiating the terms of surrender.

The Peace Memorial graciously declines to aggrandise the Americans as the villains. This was simply a horror that happened, and it happened here. May it never happen again.
